Ceramic works filled with love, faith, conviction, and hope.

The 2023 Solo Exhibition "Stars of the Universe" is an exhibition showcasing ceramic works by the artist, based on the theme of the universe and stars, which the artist has continuously explored since 2008. The artist compares the stars shining in the vast universe to the lives we lead, and has created works filled with love, faith, conviction, and hope, all grounded in the belief that "if you truly desire something, the whole universe will help you achieve it."

2023 개인전 "우주별"은 작가가 2008년부터 지속적으로 작업해온 우주와 별을 테마로 한 도자기 작품들을 선보이는 전시입니다. 작가는 거대한 우주 속에서 빛을 발하는 별들을 우리 삶의 모습에 비유하며, '간절히 원하면 온 우주가 우리를 도와준다'는 믿음을 바탕으로 사랑과 믿음, 신념과 희망을 담은 작품들을 제작해왔습니다.

The Universe Star Ceramic: Earth in Love

This work expresses the moon, countless stars, and planets seen from the rotating Earth.

Earth is the place where we live. It is the third planet from the sun and the only celestial body where life forms have emerged and thrive. These days, when we look up at the sky, most days are filled with fine dust, and we can't even see the mountains in the distance. When did this start? What used to be taken for granted is no longer so, and we now live amid numerous environmental pollutions.

This work is created with the hope that Earth will remain healthy and free from harm amidst the growing environmental issues caused by our own greed. Despite the struggles and challenges of our busy daily lives, I hope we don’t forget that we live on such a beautiful planet. And with this, I make a promise to protect this beautiful Earth from further harm.

지구를 사랑한 우주별 도자기

자전하는 지구에서 보이는 달과 수많은 별들과 행성을 표현한 작품.

지구는 우리가 살고 있는 곳이다. 태양으로부터 세 번째 궤도를 도는 행성이며 생명체가 탄생하고 서식하는 유일한 천체이다. 요즘 문득 하늘을 보면 미세먼지가 가득해 저 멀리 산이 보이지 않는 날들이 대다수이다. 언제부터인걸까. 당연했던 것들이 당연하지 않게 되었고, 수 많은 환경 오염 속에서 살고 있게 된 것이.

우리들의 욕심으로 인해 점점 심각해지는 여러 환경오염 속에서 지구가 아프지 않고 건강해지길 바라는 마음으로 제작하고 있는 작품이다. 힘들고 버거운 하루를 바쁘게 살아가면서도 우리가 이렇게 아름다운 곳에 내가 살고 있다는걸 잊지 않았으면 한다. 그리고 이렇게 아름다운 지구를 더이상 아프지 않게 하자는 약속과 함께.

"Cosmos," a collection of countless stars from the works displayed in this solo exhibition. This piece, created from the artist’s 12 years of various stories, can be seen as both the beginning and the finale of this exhibition. By closely examining this work first, it is almost like experiencing both the beginning and the end of this narrative before moving on to appreciate the other pieces.

이번 개인전에 전시된 작품들에 들어간 수 많은 우주별들의 집합체 '코스모스'. 작가의 12년 동안의 여러가지 이야기들이 모여 제작된 이 작품은 이번 전시의 시작이자 피날레라고 이야기할 수 있다. 자세히 들여다 본 후 다른 작품들의 감상을 시작한다면 이 이야기의 시작과 끝을 함께 하는 것과 다름 없다.

A piece that represents figures from Greek mythology: Eros, the god of love; Gaia, the goddess of the Earth and mother of all beings and gods (green); Uranus, the sky god and father of Cronus; and Tartarus, the primordial god and space symbolizing the deep underworld.

그리스 신화에사랑의 신인 '에로스'와 세상 모든 만물과 신들의 어머니인 대지의 여신 가이아(그린), 크로노스의 아버지이자 '하늘의 신' 우라노스, 그리고 지하세계의 깊은 곳을 상징하는 태초의 신이자 공간인 타르타로스를 표현한 작품.

The Mei-Hwa Ma-Reum is an aquatic plant that grows in rice fields, with flowers blooming in April and May, resembling water lotus flowers. The leaves are shaped similarly to the fishbone plant, which is why it is called Mei-Hwa Ma-Reum. It is found in regions such as Korea (Jeju, Jeonnam, Hamheung) and Japan. This aquatic plant, part of the buttercup family, inhabits rice fields and wetlands. It has been designated as an endangered species (Level II) by the Ministry of Environment and a rare and endangered plant by the Korea Forest Service.

매화마름은 논에 자라는 수생식물이며,꽃은 4∼5월에 피고 물매화 비슷하다. 잎은 붕어마름 같이 생겼으므로 매화마름이라고 한다.  한국(제주·전남·함북)·일본 등지에 분포한다. 논과 습지 등에 서식하는 미나리아재비과의 수생식물인 매화마름은 환경부의 멸종위기식물 Ⅱ급, 산림청의 희귀 및 멸종위기식물로 각각 지정돼 있다.

The Hallasan Cotton Grass is a perennial herb belonging to the Asteraceae family, and it is a native species of South Korea found only at the summit of Hallasan Mountain on Jeju Island. There are currently only about 100 individuals remaining in the wild, making it highly endangered. It faces significant survival threats due to environmental factors such as climate change, the spread of lowland plants to high-altitude areas, and soil erosion. It has been designated as a critically endangered species (Level 1) by the Ministry of Environment and is under protection.

한라솜다리는 국화과 솜다리속에 딸린 여러해살이풀로 제주도 한라산 정상부에서만 사는 우리나라 특산종이다. 현재 야생에 100여 개체 정도만 남았을 정도로 멸종할 가능성이 매우 크다.
기후 온난화와 이에 따른 저지대 식물의 고산 지대 확산, 토양 침식 등과 같은 환경적 요인으로 생존을 크게 위협 받고 있다. 현재 환경부 멸종위기 야생생물 1급으로 지정해 보호하고 있다.

The Yellow Hibiscus (Hwanggeun), a critically endangered species of wild plant, is found in Korea and Japan. In Korea, it is distributed in limited areas along the coastlines of Wando-gun, Goheung-gun, and Jeju Island. The plant is the only native species among the varieties of Hibiscus in Korea, and its name, "Hwanggeun," comes from its yellow flowers, resembling a yellow version of the hibiscus.

멸종위기 야생식물 1급인 황근은 세계적으로 한국과 일본에 분포하며 국내에는 전라남도 완도군, 고흥군과 제주도 해안가에 제한적으로 분포한다. 국명은 한국의 무궁화 종류 중 유일한 자생식물이며 노란무궁화라는 의미로 황근이라는 이름이 붙여졌다.

The pure and passionate energy emitted by the sun gives us the days we live. It creates day and night, light and darkness, bringing forth a day that shines even in the darkness, and a night that is born from the light. The sun is the king of the universe. Without the sun, we could not survive.

해에서 뿜어나오는 순수하고도 매우 정열적인 힘은 우리들이 살아가는 날들을 준다. 낮과 밤, 빛과 어둠을 만들어 어둠 속에서도 빛나는 낮을, 빛 속에서 어둠을 만드는 밤을 만들었다. 태양은 우주의 왕이다. 태양이 없으면 우리는 살아갈 수 없기 떄문이다.  

This piece expresses the stories and relationships that emerge when you and I, each with our own unique colors and shapes, come together and harmonize in the same space.

각자 다른 색과 모양을 지니고 살아가고 있는 너와 나, 우리가 한 공간에서 만나 어우러지는 이야기와 관계에 대하여 표현한 작품.

The Orbit Table was created from the thought of always being able to see my favorite stars of the universe. It is designed to be a functional table. Imagine how mesmerizing it would be to have meals with the universe every morning, noon, and night. At the center, the sun is surrounded by Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, all accented with Swarovski crystals.

내가 좋아하는 우주별을 항상 볼 수 있으면 좋겠다는 생각에서 제작하게 된 궤도 테이블. 실제로 테이블로 사용할 수있도록 제작했다. 매일 아침, 점심, 저녁 우주와 함께 하는 식사는 얼마나 황홀할까. 정 가운데의 태양을 중심으로 수성, 금성, 지구, 화성, 목성, 토성, 천왕성, 해왕성을 스와로브스키 보석과 함께 넣었다.

The Blue Dragon (靑龍) is a guardian deity that protects the eastern direction among the four guardian deities, along with the White Tiger, Vermilion Bird, and Black Tortoise. It is often depicted as a dragon with blue or green scales. According to legend, when a dragon attains enlightenment, the color of its scales changes to blue or green, transforming it into the Blue Dragon. Among the four guardian deities, the Blue Dragon is considered the most dignified and noble, said to reside in the deep ocean and lead the lesser dragons. As it is believed to govern water, feng shui practices suggest that placing flowing water in the eastern direction invokes the Blue Dragon's power, bringing good fortune.

청룡(靑龍)은 동서남북의 네 방위 중 동쪽을 지키는 수호신으로 백호, 주작, 현무와 더불어 사신으로 불리며 파란색 또는 초록색을 띤 용을 의미한다. 전설에서는 용이 도를 깨우치면 비늘의 색이 파란색이나 초록색으로 변해 청룡이 된다고 한다. 사신들 중에서 가장 존엄하고 고귀한 존재이고 심해 용궁에 산다고 전해지며 하급 용들의 수장이라고 한다. 그리고 물을 다스린다고 하여 풍수지리에서 동쪽에 흐르는 물을 놓으면 청룡의 힘을 끌어내 길조가 된다고 전해진다.

Myosotis scorpioides

According to a German legend, long ago, a young man swam to an island in the Danube River to pick this flower for his beloved. However, as he was returning with the flower, he was swept away by the current. In his final moments, he threw the flower to his lover, saying, "Do not forget me," and then disappeared. She kept the flower with her for the rest of her life, thinking of her lost lover. As a result, the flower's meaning became "Do not forget me."

물망초
독일의 전설에 따르면, 옛날에 도나우 강(江) 가운데 있는 섬에서 자라는 이 꽃을 애인에게 꺾어주기 위해 한 청년이 그 섬까지 헤엄을 쳐서 갔다고 한다. 그런데 그 청년은 그 꽃을 꺾어 가지고 오다가 급류에 휘말리고, 가지고 있던 꽃을 애인에게 던져주면서 ‘나를 잊지 말라’는 한 마디를 남기고 사라졌다고 한다. 그녀는 사라진 애인을 생각하면서 일생 동안 그 꽃을 몸에 지니고 살았다고 한다. 그래서 꽃말이 ‘나를 잊지 마세요’가 되었다.

Epilobium hirsutum

A critically endangered wild plant (Level 2). In August, crimson flowers bloom at the tips of the stems or branches. The fruit is a capsule that ripens in August to September. It is found in regions such as Gyeongbuk, Gangwon, and Hamgyong.

* Flower meaning: Purity, welcome, innocence

큰 바늘 꽃

멸종위기 야생식물 2급. 8월에 줄기 끝이나 가지 끝에서 홍자색 꽃이 핀다. 열매는 삭과(果)를 맺으며 8~9월에 익는다. 경북, 강원, 함경 등지에 분포해있다. 

* 꽃말 : 순결, 환영, 청초

Poppy

Named after Yang Guifei, the empress of the Tang Dynasty and the most beautiful woman of her time, because the flower is said to be as beautiful as she was. In Greek mythology, there is a story of Demeter, the goddess of grain and the earth, who, while searching for her daughter Persephone, who had been taken by Hades to the underworld, found solace by picking this flower.

* Flower meaning: Dreaminess, solace, comfort

양귀비

당나라 현종의 황후이며 최고의 미인이었던 양귀비에 비길 만큼 꽃이 아름답다고 해서 지어진 이름이다. 그리스 신화에는 곡물과 대지의 여신인 데메테르가 저승의 지배자인 하데스한테 빼앗긴 딸 페르세포네를 찾아 헤매다가 이 꽃을 꺾어서 스스로 위안을 찾았다는 이야기가 있다.
* 꽃말 : 몽상, 위안, 위로

Golden Turtle

A piece created with the intention of wishing for health, longevity, happiness, and prosperity. The turtle, one of the Ten Symbols of Longevity, is coated with 24k gold to symbolize these blessings.

금 거북이

건강과 장수를 기원하고 행복과 풍요를 기원하는 마음으로 십장생인 거북이에 24k gold를 입혀 제작한 작품.

A piece that portrays the scene of a golden turtle falling like cherry blossoms drifting in the spring breeze.

금거북이가 봄에 흩날리는 벚꽃잎처럼 떨어지는 장면을 형상화한 작품.

A piece that captures the overwhelming feeling of facing the sun when embarking on the Santiago pilgrimage, combined with the symbolic motif of the Camino de Santiago.

산티아고 순례길을 나설 때 떠오르는 해를 마주했을 때의 벅찬 기분과 순례길 상징 문양을 함께 담아 표현한 작품.

Dohwa X Suyeon Collaboration

Hwajodo (Bird and Flower Painting)

A collaborative work between the ceramic birds and butterflies of artist Dohwa and the traditional folk painting (minhwa) of her mother, artist Suyeon. This piece holds even more meaning as it is a collaboration within the family.

We are all born with our own constellations. The constellations, embroidered across the universe, have been captured in the unchanging cosmic star ceramics.

Meaning of Constellations in Modern Astronomy: Traditional constellations, such as the Big Dipper, are classified as "star families," and the term "constellation" does not refer to the imaginary lines connecting stars but to the space they occupy. There are 88 officially recognized constellations, and the entire space occupied by each of these divisions in the sky (celestial sphere) is considered a constellation.

우리들은 모두 자기만의 별자리를 가지고 태어난다. 우주에 수 놓아진 별자리를 영원히 변하지 않는 우주별 도자기에 담아보았다.

* 현대 천문학에서의 별자리 의미 : 북두칠성 등의 전통적인 별자리들은 성군으로 분류하며, "별자리"는 상상의 선으로 이어놓은 별을 말하는 것이 아니고, 그 별들이 차지하고 있는 공간을 의미한다. 학계에서 합의된 별자리는 88개가 있는데, 하늘(천구)을 88개의 조각으로 나누어 놓고 그 조각이 차지하는 공간 전체를 별자리라고 부르는 것이다.

Universe Star Black Rabbit

2023 is the "Year of the Black Rabbit." In the 60-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac, the 40th combination, Gye (癸), represents the color black, and Myo (卯) represents the rabbit. The Black Rabbit is connected to the "Year of the Black Rabbit," with the stars depicted in the form of the black rabbit.
